Welcome to Cogent. James Barnsley.
We are delighted to welcome James Barnsley as the newest member of our team here at Cogent. Joining the Relationships Hive, James lets us in on his experiences before Cogent and life outside of work.
What’s your new role at Cogent and what are you most excited about?
I’m joining Cogent as a Relationships Executive, and I’m most excited to be getting involved in our client’s latest campaigns, from idea generation to execution.
What were you doing before Cogent?
I’ve just finished my three-year degree in Marketing, Advertising & PR at Birmingham City University, whilst also working as a Digital Marketing Executive part time whilst studying. Prior to pursuing a career in marketing, I worked in the building trade as a plasterer!
I first heard of Cogent whilst at university when they came in to do a presentation on what life in a marketing agency is like. The mix of different clients, different day to day responsibilities and teamwork made Cogent sound like a great place to work! As a result of my success with the B-HIVE creative project whilst in my second year of university, I was awarded a 3-month placement at Cogent during the Summer of 2017 – I jumped at the chance! During my placement, I got hands-on with several campaigns which gave me a great insight into agency life, as well as being supported by the Cogent team every step of the way. When I had the opportunity to re-join Cogent as a post-graduate, my previous experience of working here made it an easy decision!
What do you like doing outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy football and have a season ticket at Wolves. I also go to as many away matches as possible. I love TV shows and spend way too much time on Netflix watching the latest releases – any shows with Gordon Ramsay in it is a personal favourite.
Can you tell us about an example of Togetherness that you find particularly inspiring?
“The example of togetherness when Atletico Madrid won La Liga in Spain in the 2013-14 season.”
Despite facing competition from arguably the two biggest sides in club football, Barcelona & Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid overcame the odds to be crowned the Spanish league champions. Despite having a budget considerably less than their rivals, they had an incredible work ethic on the pitch and a real team spirit which included not only the players but the manager, the backroom staff and the fans. They even won the title at the Nou Camp and were applauded off the field by the Barcelona supporters. A true testament to the power of togetherness!
