BIRMINGHAM'S BID TO BECOME UK CITY OF CULTURE 2013
As a member of Birmingham's Chamber, Tim Pile has written to Cllr Martin Mullaney, Chair of Birmingham's Cultural Partnership to offer Cogent Elliott's support of Birmingham's bid to become the UK's first City of Culture in 2013.
Bidding for the title has already raised the profile of Birmingham’s cultural life and winning the competition will enable us to promote the city more effectively as a great place to live, work and visit.
The plans for an enhanced programme throughout the year will benefit residents and visitors alike. In addition, the media coverage generated will help to evidence the quality of life in the city which will enable local businesses to attract the skilled and creative workforce that is necessary for our future success. The planned programme to invest in the creativity of young people in the city will also pay dividends in developing local talent which will be needed to continue the city’s proud track record of innovation and to equip us for the knowledge-based economy.
The bid is titled ‘Birmingham Culture’ to reflect Birmingham’s status as a global city with a world class programme of arts and cultural activities serving richly diverse communities. It will be submitted to the Department of Culture, Media and Sport by 28th May 2010.
